全基因體定序為人類基因體計畫(The Human Genome Project, HGP)之重大目標。隨著HGP完成後,醫學已邁入所謂的後基因體時代 (post-genome era)。由於基因體序列之完整解碼,疾病與基因的關係也因著對基因體功能的瞭解而更加清楚。藉由基因及蛋白的調控及交互作用,人類得以控制正常的發育及生長,執行各種正常的生理機能。而疾病的產生,也緣於基因與蛋白的異常。雖然我們已知人類基因序列,但大部份基因的真正功能及其與疾病的關係,則尚未能了解。如何利用人類基因體計畫所衍生的大量資訊,應用於醫學領域,了解疾病的發生原理及其基因之變異,進而能找出有療效的標的分子,開發新的診斷方法及治療藥物,為後基因世代轉譯研究最重要之課題 在這後基因體時代,生物科技的進步足以支援許多臨床相關的尖端研究。近年來無論國內外的許多研究機關,紛紛成立了「基因體醫學中心」,更突顯「基因體醫學」研究之重要。成功大學「基因體醫學中心」成立之主要目的是要在成功大學建立一現代化的基因體研究之核心實驗室,提供高品質的基因體技術支援、諮詢、和相關生物資訊的分析,使研究人員可以利用基因體技術平台來發展相關之尖端研究。本中心的長遠目標是發展成南部甚至全國重要及具特色之研究中心,並與國際研究接軌。除提供服務外,本中心亦將積極推動技術移轉,以實際造福臨床檢驗與診斷、先期治療和個人化醫療等的臨床應用。
