The College of Science was founded in 1956 and currently has five departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology and Optics. It also has the Institute Space Science and Plasma Physics. Strategies and goals 1. Research a. Establish and improve research groups within the college. b. Speedy and orderly construction of the planned College of Science building to improve research environment. c. Labor for the continuing presence of National Center for Theoretical Science in NCKU. d. Recruit and retain outstanding faculty members. e. Recruit and retain outstanding post-doctoral researchers and technicians. f. Establish interdisciplinary research within and across colleges. 2. Teaching a. Invest in library and laboratory equipment. b. Construction of the planned College of Science building to provide more classroom space. c. Provide students with quality teaching and overseas opportunities. d. Strengthen the core curriculum and improve service classes. e. Establish a Center for Science Education with the goal to improve basic science education in secondary education in southern Taiwan. More specifically, the Center will offer science education classes for both NCKU students and high school teachers in southern Taiwan. 3. Globalization a. The college plans to study the established institutions world-wide to learn and adapt their successful policies to improve ours. b. Establish teaching and research collaborations with world renowned institutions. c. Encourage long term visits of outstanding scholars to NCKU. d. Encourage international research collaborations and recruit international students. 4. Industrial outreach a. Improve communication and cooperation with the Southern Technology Park. b. Encourage interdisciplinary research with industrial applications.
