Research Interests
The research in Prof. Chi-Chang Shieh’s laboratory focuses on the immune mechanisms underlying the tissue inflammation of human diseases including allergic asthma, immune mediated arthritis and autoimmune reactions in immunodeficiency diseases.
His recent laboratory research took advantage of the resources in the campuses of National Cheng Kung University and Southern Facility of National Laboratory Animal Center, both located in Tainan City, to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanism leading to tissue inflammation in patients with low production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, he devised methods aimed to correct the low production of ROS by leukocytes, which is the cause of the primary immunodeficiency disease chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), using state-of-the-art technologies and cutting-edge knowledge in leukocyte biology.
The main accomplishments of his research are concisely described as follows:
1. To establish a clinic of human primary immunodeficiency for diagnosis, treatment and research for this group of difficult diseases.
2. To develop the research for secondary immunodeficiency 3. To unravel the mechanisms underlying redox regulation of immune responses 4. Development of organelle-specific treatment for immunological diseases
