In these years, many countries have invested a huge amount of money and time in designing and implementing home service robot (HSR). The research of robots in Japan shows the leading level of science and technology and excellent high-tech design. The Korea government even predicts that there will be at least one robot in every family in 2015. Home service robot is the ultimate integration of high-tech systems that includes: the mechanics design of HSR, the choice of the servo motors, driving circuit and the servo controller, design and implementation of force-feedback-based arm, the coordination motion strategy of arm, the design of robot’s fingers, the path planning of the end point of the robot’s arm, the establishment of 3D stereo vision system, the recognition and object tracking of 3D stereo vision system, the recognition of multi-objects, the research and implementation of technique of image processing in real time, the design of intelligent behavior control, the integration of electric/electronic circuit design, the design of SOPC intelligent chip, the implementation of natural language communication, the exploration of unknown environment and the construction of virtual map, information of sensor fusion, and the research of communication and cooperation strategy between HSR and human beings, and so on. The aim of this joint project is to become the champion of RoboCup@Home, and the ultimate goad is to implement the commercialized HSR for Taiwan and Chinese world. After integrating the four subprojects, we will accomplish two kinds of HSR, one is ordinary wheeled mobile robot, and the other is omni-directional wheeled mobile robot. This joint project consists of four subprojects, in which each principle investigator conducts research in his speciality, and the result will be shared to benefit each other through regular seminars and workshops. The focus of the first year is to design and implement a HSR, which can successfully accomplish the first-stage competition of RoboCup@Home, that is, introduction, fast follow, fetch and carry, who is who, and competitive lost and found. At the end of second year, the developed HSR possesses the complete capability to finish the stage two competitions, that is, partybot, supermarket, walk and talk, clean up. The purposes of third year are twofold, one is to realize some particular challenging tasks, and the other is to implement a prototype HSR for Taiwan and Chinese world.
