Visuospatial cognitive ability, also known as spatial intelligence, is defined as the skill to generate, retain, search, and transform well-structured images, which is considered as a core element of STEM career fields. Visuospatial cognitive ability is also associated with the ability of mathematical geometry. Although mathematics and geometry education has been implemented in Taiwan for many years, the existing teaching methods only focus on the learning of independent concepts underlying the geometry, which have been analysed by the academic experts. Thus these would result in a limitation in learning mathematics due to the insufficiency of the systemic learning and training on visuospatial domain-knowledge.In order to break through the current mathematic and geometric education framework, the two-year project is designed to develop a visuospatial training software via virtual reality. We expect that the trained elementary students will not only improve their spatial intelligence but also their mathematic geometry reasoning skills. In the first year, we will spend a half year on developing the software based on the Unity platform and Google Cardboard. The software will focus on the training of the basic components of spatial intelligence (i.e., generation, retention, search and transformation of 3D images) via a game-based design. After the development, academic experts and elementary students are invited to perform the usability testing to improve the user experience. In the following year, we plan to validate our learning tool by recruiting elementary school students in 5th grade. Elementary school students need to go through about a month of learning and training, and to compare the differences between the pre and post training. It will be verified that virtual reality visuospatial cognitive training can indeed increase the students' spatial intelligence which in turns increase the geometry reasoning skills. Finally, we will quantify the training data into a primary student's personal spatial intelligence quadrangle chart, as an important basis for evaluating a primary school student's spatial intelligence. This project looks forward to breaking the current educational deadlock. It is expected to increase elementary students' learning interests while training core competencies. We believe that our results will benefit our society and country while cultivating more outstanding STEM talents.
