Project Details
Description
Despite the fact that efficiency in markets rests primarily on the level of competition among agents, little is known on how decision makers perceive competition. Moreover, different structure and environment in competition would result in divergent market outcomes. In light of its impact on market efficiency, the current research project aims to investigate how choices are made and the relevant mental process when decision makers face different forms or structures of competition with a series of fMRI experiments. We will look into the issues from two perspectives: We will first examine whether distinctive formats of competition will end up with different efficiency. As price and quantity competitions commonly discussed are indeed under unparalleled level of competition intensity, we would like to recruit volunteers to act as price or quantity setter separately in a set of competition under analogous intensity of competition in search for a better understanding in the impact from distinctive forms of competition. Moreover, we will delve into the contrasting interactions when decision makers face opponents of divergent intention to cooperate. We tend to approach this question by recruiting volunteers to face two distinctive types of programmed opponents with high and low intention to cooperate respectively under previous setup to better understand the impact from different forms of competition.
