Abstract

In Taiwan, rod supports are usually used for suspension systems in hospitals and public spaces, such as fire-sprinkler piping systems and trapeze systems. Because pipe breakage and leakage after an earthquake can reduce the building function and cost lots of money and time to recover, the dynamic behavior of the above systems is important to understand before a good retrofit program is proposed. This study focuses on the rod support for suspended fire-protection sprinkler piping systems and suspended trapeze system. Retrofitted with cables that satisfied the seismic component requirements from NFPA13 and ISAT, and the cable restraint components which were certified by UL, we studied their dynamic behavior. By shaking table tests, the system identification and system characteristic were analyzed for before and after retrofit. Test results indicated that cables are effective to reduce the horizontal displacement of rod supported piping and trapeze systems in earthquake motion.
