Abstract

The rates of dementia are rising worldwide as our world population ages
People with dementia (PwD) are prone to get lost because their spatial
navigation ability decreased. This behavior not only has a serious impact
on safeties of PwD but also increases their family's and society's burden.
With the advancement of technology and facing a big issue of getting lost
in PwD, many countries start to provide global positioning system (GPS)
device to prevent them getting lost and assist them aging in place. It extends the related ethical issues. This article aimed to analyze by four ethical principles (Beauchamp & Childress, 2019) to discuss the ethical dilemma in using GPS location devices for tracking PwD, and provide related suggestions to this ethical dilemma. The medical team is suggested to play the role of communication, coordination, evaluation, and health education considering of the PwD’s safety and respect their autonomy and privacy. It might help caregivers to prepare more thoroughly and achieve a win-win result, and inform the policy makers to strengthen adequate regulations.
