Abstract

This article discusses the relevance between first names and courtesy names of the seven characters in Zuo Zhuan & Shi Ji. The following eight characters: Yōng Wū, his courtesy name is "Yì-yá" (from Zuo Zhuan); Guó cān's is "Zi-sī" (from Zuo Zhuan); both Yàn Jí & Kŏng Jí's is "Zi-sī" and Yuán Xiàn's is "Zì-sī" (from Shi Ji); Lè Hùn's is "Zi-míng" (from Zuo Zhuan); Shí Zuò-shŭ'ss is "Zi-míng" (from Shi Ji). The relevance between first names and courtesy names of these eight characters is synonymous meaning such as Yōng Wū; or it is similar meaning like Guó cān, Yàn Jí, Kŏng Jí and Yuán Xiàn; moreover, it is opposite meaning, for instance, Lè Hùn and Shí Zuò-shŭ.
