Vietnamese Gia Dinh Bao (Gia Định Báo 1865-1910) and Taiwanese Tâi-oân-hú-siâ^n Kàu-hōe-pò (1885-1969) were the first Romanized newspapers in Vietnam and Taiwan, respectively. Trương Vĩnh Ký (1837-1898) served as the founder and editor-in-chief of Gia Định Báo. He was raised in a Catholic family in Vĩnh Long province. Trương was a talented scholar and knew 27 languages, such as French, Vietnamese roman scripts, classical Han writing, Nom scripts, Latin, Greek, English, Japanese, and Hindi. He also published hundreds of books. His major contributions are: 1) Translating Western and Vietnamese classics into Romanized Vietnamese, 2) developing textbooks for Vietnamese and French language learning, and 3) literary creations and research on Romanized Vietnamese. We can conclude that Trương Vĩnh Ký was a pioneer of Vietnamese studies. His contributions to Vietnam are similar to those of Rev. Barclay, Rev. Campbell and Professor Lim Bo-seng in Taiwan.
