Abstract
The present paper mainly studies the turning circle performance of the trimaran ship in waves. The effects of different side hull arrangements on the turning circle motion of the trimaran ship are also investigated by using the time domain simulation analysis. The mathematical model including seakeeping and maneuvering characteristics are applied here and the relative wave elevation concept is considered. In order to calculate the hydrodynamic coefficients of the instantaneous draft of the each hull section for the trimaran ship at any time in waves, the B-spline fairing method is adopted to simulate the source points of the hull sections for the source distribution method. The tactical diameter, advance, transfer and turning time for one tuning circle with respect to different side hull arrangements are calculated for comparisons. The results reveal that the arrangement with the middle clearance and middle stagger i.e. PL2 and PT2, has the better turning performance. The present analysis can be as the useful reference for the consideration of the trimaran ship maneuvering characteristics either in calm water or in waves.
