Abstract

Obesity is one of the major causes of mortality and co-morbidity afflicting modern society, and includes cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Moreover, obesity has a significant impact on women of childbearing age. Increased body weight, for example, can result in infertility in women of reproductive age. Further, there is a high risk of complications, including gestational diabetes, hypertension, macrosomia, and a higher rate of cesarean section in gravidas. Bariatric surgery is the most effective intervention by which to improve body weight and obesity-related complications in severely obese patients. Ante- and post-partum care, such as contraception, nutritional supplements, and the risk of complications in women of childbearing age after bariatric surgery, are still inconclusive and in need of further discussion. We report a 39-year-old obese woman who conceived 2 months after post-sleeve surgery went on to have a successful pregnancy under the comprehensive care of a multi-disciplinary weight control team. The gestational care after bariatric surgery, including contraception, gestational nutrition, and complications, are discussed from multiple viewpoints. We hope to provide adequate care for women of reproductive age who undergo bariatric surgery.
