Abstract
A 91-year-old female suffered from non-typhoidal Salmonella bacteremia and was admitted to a geriatric ward in a medical center. During hospitalization, computed tomography scan revealed a suspected infected aneurysm located in the right internal iliac artery. She then received antimicrobial treatment and completed a 16-week course of oral therapy during outpatient follow-up at the center's geriatric clinic. No recurrence was present. Non-typhoidal Salmonella bacteremia in the elderly is often accompanied by vascular infection or mycotic aneurysm which report an incidence rate of 35-41% as well as high morbidity and mortality. It has been suggested that patients aged over 50 years with non-typhoidal Salmonella bacteremia should undergo clinical assessment, such as computed tomography scan, to exclude concurrent vascular infection. For cost effectiveness, a simple scoring algorithm is available for identifying high-risk cases and arranging timely investigation to improve prognosis.
