Abstract
Railway ballast is generally mined from natural stone. If we don't elaborate alternatives, the environment and nature resources will keep being damaged. Basic-oxygen-furnace (BOF) slag is a by-product of steelmaking. If doing more research on BOF slag, it can produce a big benefit to environmental protection and sustainable ecology. The thesis is aimed at the discussion of engineering performance of BOF slag on railway ballast. Experimenting the BOF slag with standards, then discuss the feasibility of using BOF slag on railway ballast. First of all, the BOF slag using in this thesis had being stabilized, excluding the properties of water swelling. Experimenting the BOF slag with advanced countries standards, including Los Angeles abrasion test, impact value test, rail insulation test, lateral resistance test and particle index test. Comparing with normal ballast, which comes from crashed stone, can know the differences. The tests also can find out whether BOF slag can pass the standards or not. Finally, the experiment proofs that BOF slag is better than normal ballast in many test and passes the ballast standards. On the engineering properties of view, BOF slag is very suitable for using as railway ballast. But, BOF slag is byproduct of steel, so it should also pass the chemical and environmental test. Keep researching on this way can make the research more complete and perfect.
