Abstract
The occurrence of emerging contaminants is greatly influenced by human activity. Due to the development of advanced analytical instruments, detection of trace contaminants in water samples becomes more easily with appropriate pretreatments. This article briefly introduces the detection of emerging contaminants in drinking water and surface water samples by LC-MS/MS. The analytical procedures and the difficulties were discussed. Several emerging contaminants were monitored to investigate whether drinking water quality is influenced by human activity or not. The residual concentrations of herbicides and herbicide degradation product were non-detected after water treatment procedures. However, herbicide degradation product had been detected more frequently than its parent compound in all three types investigated samples. In Baihe reservoir, emerging contaminants (herbicides, herbicide degradation product and oxytetracycline) occurs at lower concentrations than those in Agongdian reservoir. The results indicate that Agondian reservoir undertook more contaminants from human activities. Since hot springs exist in Baihe, samples collected from hot spring hotel's wastewater and neighbor river were detected with the occurrence triclosan(ND-0.14 μg/L) and perfluorooctanoic(ND-8.2 ng/L) respectively. The analytical procedures and the difficulties were also discussed.
