Abstract

A mechanism for tearing onset near ideal stability boundaries was discussed. It was found that tearing modes were driven unstable by a rapid increase in the linear tearing stability index just before the onset. The analysis showed that the nonlinear 3D resistive magnetohydrodynamic code NIMROD was used to evolve equilibria to provide more comprehensive prediction of the island evolution during the early nonlinear phase.
