Abstract

This research explores the relationship between unexpected outcomes generated through parametric design tools and the design creative process. We conducted an empirical study to observe how designers behave while encountering unexpected outcomes using parametric design tools as well as other kinds of design tools. From our study, there are some indications that the space of possible design solutions of the participants was expanded with the existence of unexpected outcomes. The preliminary result is encouraging. Further studies may need to address experience designers and novice designers separately.
