Abstract

In this paper, a low phase-noise CMOS cross-coupled voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using an active inductor for wireless local area network (WLAN) applications is presented. The proposed VCO achieves low phase-noise by using the active inductor to suppress the second harmonic (2ω0) of LC tank. The VCO achieves −125.8 dBc/Hz phase-noise at 1MHz offset from the 2.33 GHz carrier frequency, and frequency tuning range is about 25% from 2.01 to 2.62GHz. This VCO consumes 2.3mA from a 1.8V supply with chip area of 0.75 × 0.64mm2.
