Abstract

In modern data storage devices, great efforts are being made for achieving higher recording and data transfer rate. Spindle motors play a very important role in such a progress. This paper presents the design and development of a slim spindle motor for blue ray disc player applications, which has a hydrodynamic bearing to obtain better motor dynamic properties. Compared with the conventional sleeve bearing spindle motors, superior dynamic characteristics of the developed motor are experimentally obtained. It shows that the developed motor can reduce axial repeatable run-out (RRO) and improve structural stiffness effectively with an adequate design of hydrodynamic bearing parameters.
