Abstract
A generalized method for fitting a pair of continuous arcs (known as biarc) between two data points with given directional constraints is proposed. Such a curve-fitting technique is useful for generating a continuous smooth tool path of a numerically controlled machine in which circular arc is incorporated. The developed biarcs-fitting method eliminates the problems in conventional straight-line approximation or single-arc fitting of curved tool path where it leaves ridges on the finished surface of the workpiece. The capability and advantages of the proposed biarcs-fitting method are demonstrated by applying it to the numerically controlled machining of a curved die profile for tube extrusion and a cam profile.
