Abstract

A previously reported thiocyanate based hybrid molecular salt l(dpaH)+(NCS)-] (1) (dpa = 2,2'-dipyridylamine) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. In this work, we have investigated the binding property of this salt with Calf Thymas DNA (CT DNA) using absorption and emission titration, thermal melting studies, viscosity experiments and circular dichroism studies. Binding curves constructed from absorption and emission changes indicate that, the molecular salt displays higher binding affinity (>105 M-1) towards DNA. Spectroscopic and hydrodynamic investigations reveal that molecular salt 1 behaves as an effective DNA intercalator.
