Abstract

This paper is divided into two parts to reveal the interconnection between asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and Ethernet, and to guarantee quality of service (QoS) for the multimedia data transmission. First, we have to solve the addressing problem. We discuss the addressing model for classical IP over ATM, LAN emulation, Peer model and Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP). We then propose our address resolution model, Peer Leader Address Resolution Protocol (PLARP). Second, we design a new connection admission control engine named edge-device connection admission control (ECAC) server to attain the QoS guarantees between the ATM network and Ethernet for multimedia data transmission. We use the ECAC server to audit the connection request which is responsible for traffic control. Finally, we conclude with a simulation result.
