An application of HFR data on estimation of drifter velocities off eastern Taiwan

Abstract

Ocean surface currents observed by four high frequency radars (HFR) located on the east coast of Taiwan were analyzed. Deployment of selflocating drifters was used to evaluate the performance of the HFR systems on mapping the ocean surface currents. Totally, six drifters were deployed during July 1 and September 9 in 2012. Comparisons of HFR currents and drifter velocity along the drifter trajectories showed a consistent trend. However the HFR derived currents were much smaller than the drifter velocities, and large velocity differences were found for the trajectories where water depth changed fast and dramatically. The difference was thought to be due to the limitation of spatial resolution of the HFR systems used in the study. Besides, the complicated flow structure also affected the performance of the velocity estimations along drifter trajectories based on HFR currents. This was due to the strong Kuroshio interacting with the complicated seabed topography off eastern Taiwan and the eddy propagation from western Pacific basin into the study domain.
