Abstract

Early supplier involvement is widely applied to improve the product collaborative development process and has been proven to be able to shorten product development cycle time in many cases. However, there is few research related to how to justify the exact impact on the implementation of a collaborative design project before it starts. The purpose of this research is to design a systematic method, using a binary two-dimensional design structure matrix, to provide managers a tool to evaluate the influence of different supplier involvement modes based on the degree of task dependence and task characteristics of each task. Further, the proposed method is justified by an illustrative case and is used to compare different early supplier involvement scenarios. Copyright
