Abstract

This study examined the application of porous basket energy dissipation work and groin to protection of concave river bank. Wujiancuo, Pachang Stream is the focus area of flood protection because the river channel of Pachang Stream at Wujiancuo turns 90 degrees, is neighboring Jinsui port bridge and has villages on both banks. Hence, we choose the area as the experimental site. 3 porous basket arrays with 48 porous baskets in total, each basket array installed with iron wire nets, were set up at the upstream of groin and the river overlooking side of groin head. Topographic surveys were conducted before the installation and after flood events for observing the sediment aggradations at concave river bank and groin head. Two years after the installation of porous basket arrays, obvious aggradations at the high beaches after 3 porous basket arrays were shown by the survey results. Part of the area rose by 6 meters. With only survey results in 2 years, we are not sure about the effectiveness of basket arrays for protection against long-term and flood erosions. We will verify the effectiveness of basket arrays for concave river bank protection with further long-term topographic survey and in-situ experiment conducted during flood event.
