Bending analysis of thick cross-ply laminated doubly-curved shells

Abstract

Bending analysis of cross-ply, doubly-curved laminated shells using elasticity theory is presented. Due to the mathematical complexity, an approximate approach based on the assumption suggested by Soong is used instead of using exact three-dimensional elasticity. Series solution is employed in this paper. The problem studied is about the static response of doubly-curved shallow shells subjected to transverse loading. The solution obtained can provide results to verify the accuracy of the 2-D shell theories. From the study, it is found that the general behavior of doubly-curved shells is very similar to that of laminated plates.
