Abstract

Treatment of [Mn 4 O 2 (OAc) 6 (py) 2 (dbm) 2 ] (dbmH = dibenzoylmethane) with either NBu n 4 Br in hot MeCN or Me 3 SiBr in CH 2 Br 2 leads to the 3Mn III , Mn IV cubane complex [Mn 4 O 3 Br(OAc) 3 (dbm) 3 ] 3, the initial example of Br - bridging high-oxidation-state (≥ III ) Mn ions; in addition, 3 and its Cl - analogue display similar and reversible redox processes and similar magnetic exchange interactions, observations of significant biological relevance to the photosynthetic water-oxidation enzyme.
