Abstract

This paper presents the characteristic analysis of a 4-pole 36-slot interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor with post-assembly magnetization. The magnetization is conducted using the own stator and winding of the investigated motor. A range of impulses are applied to the winding to magnetize the magnet and the process is modeled and simulated using finite element analysis. The magnet with various magnetization levels are then used for further characteristic analysis and simulation. Among these magnets, the fully saturated magnet is treated as the case with preassembly magnetization so that the comparison can be made. The results show that less saturated magnet with postassembly magnetization can possess better characteristic in terms of cogging torque and back electromotive force (EMF) constants.
