Abstract
A uniformly valid asymptotic solution for water waves is presented, which accounts for the combined effects of refraction due to slowly varying water depth and diffraction by a long breakwater. The ppresent theory is more general than the approximate solution developed by P. L-F. Liu and C. C. Mei, because the present theory is valid near the edge and the tip of the breakwater. A numerical example is given for the case of a shore-connected breakwater.
