Several industrial tuning methods for the PID controller such as the Ziegler-Nichols method, are based on cross-over information-ultimate gain and cross-over frequency. We show here that these methods must fail for a class of systems that we have named resonant systems. For nonresonant systems, we also propose an improvement of the empirical Ziegler-Nichols method by carrying out a rigorous expansion of the leading poles about the cross-over point. Our results are conveniently summarized in graphical form for easy applications.
