Design, fabrication and testing of novel hybrid structure heat pipe for concentrator photovoltaic

Abstract

This research presents a new design method to fabricate the novel hybrid structure flat plate heat pipe (NHSP heat pipe) for concentrator photovoltaic. The NHSP heat pipe composed of flattened copper pipe, sintered wick structure and rhombic copper mesh supporting structure. The newly-designed supporting structure can enhance the mechanical strength of the heat pipe and to shorten the reflux path of the working fluid. The experiments demonstrate that the thermal resistance of the NHSP heat pipe is about 72% lower than the traditional copper mesh screen heat pipe. Besides, the thermal resistance is about 65% lower after the supporting structure is added to the heat pipe. The result shows that the NHSP heat pipe has the best performance for concentrator photovoltaic which can increase the photoelectric conversion efficiency about 3.1% compared to aluminum substrate.
