Development of an ontology-based knowledge base for engineering design

Engineering design is a complicated and knowledge intensive activity of enterprise, and the success of engineering design is one of the key factors of product competitiveness. To support designers carry out design effectively, enterprises have to build knowledge bases and knowledge management systems to help them capture, share, and reuse corporate design knowledge. Most of the knowledge bases display resolutions in geometric or word form, but fails to convey the know-how of engineering design, that is, the process designers transform product concepts into the design solution and the traces of their logic and thinking. The knowledge hidden in designers' minds is believed as the most valuable asset needed to be extracted in engineering designs. The goal of this research is to develop an ontology-based knowledge base for engineering design based on a proposed ontology development methodology. Using the proposed methodology, an ontology-based knowledge base is developed through systematic collection, definition, formalization, compilation, refinement, representation and storage of engineering design knowledge. The ontology-based knowledge base is able to convey the designers' ideas and related product information, make implicit design experience explicit and completely extract the design intents, design concept and design solution, and is consequently capable of supporting engineering design activities, enabling users to completely see the design conception of each engineering design case and extract the needed knowledge. The engineering design knowledge base built by the proposed methodology may bring enterprises advantages and benefits, such as the systematic approach for engineering design knowledge deduction, and enhancement of reusability, readability and maintainability of engineering knowledge. A knowledge base for vehicle design and mechanisms for engineering knowledge retrieval will be developed and presented to verify the feasibility and usability of the proposed knowledge model and methodology.
