Direct observation of ferroelectricity in Quasi-zero-dimensional barium titanate nanoparticles

Abstract

Piezoresponse force microscopic results from barium titanate (BaTiO 3) nanoparticles of two different sizes were investigated, which directly demonstrated the existence of ferroelectricity in BaTiO3. Highly crystalline BaTiO3 nanoparticles were synthesized by a solvothermal drying process. The mixture of Ba(OH)2, 2-methoxyethanol and distilled water was placed in a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) vessel, capped with a PTFE cover and placed inside a stainless steel bomb. A lock-in technique was used to measure the amplitude of mechanical vibration, which was used to evaluate the effective piezoelectric coefficient, and the phase which determined the direction of the polarization. The results of SEM analysis showed that the nanoparticles were deposited in the form of agglomerates, and formed several islands with average dimensions of a few micrometers on the substrate.
