Abstract

In this paper effect of methanogenic bacteria retention time (RT) and feed substrate concentration on bacteria growth and substrate consumption characteristics is studied. Experimental apparatus consists of a reactor, mixed liquor overflow system, gas collection system and feed cylinder with magnetic stirrer and provided with feed pump and gas recirculation pump. Discussed are the relationships among substrate loading rate, organic suspension in the system and effluent concentrations at different RT; the course of gas production rate, organic suspension and effluent concentrations for certain RT and acetic acid concentrations; the effect of dilution rate on specific methane production rate; growth yields of methanogenic bacteria at different dilution rates and at different feed acetic acid concentrations; kinetic constants at different dilution rates, etc.
