Abstract

Type 403 stainless steel is primarily used for the fabrication of steam turbine blades in electric power generating systems. These blades are subjected to cyclic stresses under operating conditions. Sodium chloride and sodium hydroxide are common impurities in the steam turbine system, and the buildup of local concentrations of these impurities on the blade surfaces is a well-known phenomenon.
