Effect of temperature and nonstoichiometry on hydration of YBa2Cu3O7-x at low H2O pressure

The hydration reaction of YBa2Cu3O7-x at different values of x was studied at PH20=16 Torr as a function of temperature. The reaction was followed by measuring the PH2O change. At room temperature where 16 Torr is saturated vapor pressure, condensation of water on YBa2Cu3O7-x followed by its decomposition was observed. On the other hand, the reaction at higher temperature was different. An absorption of water occurred. However, no decomposition was observed during the initial stage of reaction. At intermediate temperatures slow absorption controlled by diffusion was observed for x=0.1, 0.57, 0.77 and 1.0. When x in YBa2Cu3O7-x was 0.57 and 0.77, an extraordinary fast absorption was observed at temperatures over 150°C. The X-ray diffrac tion of specimens after slow absorption revealed that specimens were almost the same as before. Some satellite peaks have been observed for the specimen after the fast absorption.
