Enhancing heat transfer rate for simulated packages by vortex generators

Abstract

An experimental investigation has been conducted to study the characteristics of thermal fields with vortex generators as local heat transfer promoters. Parameters examined included Reynolds number, channel height, vortex generators' height and locations. Results show that vortex generator is an effective heat transfer enhancement device. Heat transfer coefficient of the package with vortex generator can be increased by about 20 approximately 60 % depending on the height and the arrangement of vortex generators. Even packages in neighboring columns without vortex generators installed can also increase heat transfer rate. Results also show that there exists an optimum channel height, which is about five times the height of simulated packages in the cases with vortex generators.
