Abstract

This paper is to study the screening effectiveness of surface wave by rectangular open or in-filled trench. Tests in model scale have been carried out to study the effects due to isolation of strip foundation subjected to vertical vibration on the vertical displacement amplitude. The major influence factors considered are trench geometry and in-filled material. The results from this study show that screening effectiveness of in-filled trench depends highly on the trench geometry while trench width is relative unimportant factor for open trench. The results also show that the screening effectiveness of open trench is better than in-filled trench. The test results are compared with those of the numerical calculations by the boundary element method (BEM)
