Abstract

The phenomenon of turbulent swirling nonreacting confined flow emerging from an annular swirler, over a sudden expansion is investigated by experimental and computational methods, simulating the flow-field in a can-type gas turbine combustor. In the experimental set-up, swirl is generated by tangential entry of flow from two symmetrical side tubes. Laser sheet technique is employed for flow visualization and photographs are taken, which are further enhanced by digital image processing. Features of the swirling and non-swirling cases are noted. Comparison of the numerical flowfield results with the experimental findings is carried out and several useful conclusions are reached.
