We report single step growth of c-axis oriented, high density ZnO nanorods on an amorphous surface, such as poly (methyl-methacrylate) [PMMA] coated Si (1 0 0) substrate. The growth is carried out in liquid medium at low growth temperature (≤100°C), without the use of any seed layer. It takes 5 min to obtain ZnO coatings comprising of well aligned ZnO nanorods. The as-prepared ZnO coatings have a significantly high density of nucleation (2×109/cm2), and excellent structure quality. A novel growth mechanism is proposed, where the initial nucleation and growth of ZnO is through the incorporation of the ZnO nuclei into the microreliefs of PMMA. The strong orientation is ascribed to the minimization of surface energy at the substrate film interface. A comparative study is carried out by using acrylic sheet, and Si (1 0 0) substrate.
