Abstract

Highway congestion is seriously affected by traffic accidents. The stochastic nature associated with an accident causes significant difficulties in accident duration forecast, travel time prediction and route guidance. Therefore it is vital to gain an insight into the characteristics of accidents. In this study we analyze the accident database from the Police Radio Station in order to find useful clues with any possible data feature. Focus is mainly on the impact of accident duration on traffic congestion. Further studies could refer this study results to process the model inputs for model development.
