FEMOD: A consultative expert system for finite element modeling

Abstract

This paper describes an expert system FEMOD, which serves as a consultant for finite element modeling. FEMOD gives the designer advice in modeling for a special finite element program EAL. It contains rules for selection of elements, node selection, mesh generation, selection of subdivision lines, and mesh refinement. The structure of the knowledge base, knowledge representation, and inference engine used in this system are presented. The present capabilities of this expert system are discussed and demonstrated with example problems.
