Abstract
This paper deals with finite element modelling of experiments which the authors have conducted to detect edge flaws in laminated plates. The modification of impact forces experienced by a piezoelectric transducer due to the proximity of a flaw was observed. The modifications include lower pulse peak, more complicated pulse shape and altered 'ringing' of the transducer subsequent to the actual impact. Both edge flaws in adhesively bonded aluminum panels and artificial delaminations in graphite-epoxy plates have been investigated.
