Abstract

This paper classified the possible conceptual designs and actual existing implementations based on the theoretically possible combinations of the degrees of freedom. The advantages and disadvantages of each concept were analyzed. Based on the definition of coordinate systems and the configuration code of machine tools, design limitations for five-axis machining centers were identified. The new concepts based on the Stewart platform introduced recently in industry were also briefly discussed. The results of this paper are beneficial to engineers in the design and evaluation of five-axis machine tools.
