Abstract

Ancient Chinese mechanical devices with flexible members (rope, thread, belt, and chain) can be divided by function into four types: grain processing devices, water lifting devices, handiwork devices, and textile devices. This chapter presents the uses and components of the devices, analyzes the numbers of member and possible types of joints, and provides their structural sketches.
