Abstract

The flying characteristics of near-field recording (NFR) slider with solid immersion len (SIL) are considered. According to the requirement of near-field optical technology, the slider must be flying above the disk with a distance shorter than the wavelength of the illuminant. Under this condition of extremely low flying height, it is very important to consider the effects of gas rarefaction and surface roughness. The modified average Reynolds equation, as well as the equations of motion of the slider is solved numerically to obtain the flying height of the NFR slider. Many parameters influencing the flying shape (height, angle of inclination, roll of angle) including the slider velocity, the radius of SIL, the orientation of roughness, the Peklenik number, and the standard deviation of composite roughness, are discussed in this paper.
