Formation, Characterization, and Properties of One-Dimensional Oxide Nanostructures

Abstract

This chapter discusses the formation, characterization, and properties of 1-D oxide nanostructures. Metal oxides have long developed technological and industrial interest because of their general characteristics, including hardness, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. In addition, oxides also possess potential optical, electrical, and magnetic properties for applications in many advanced devices. Research on the subject of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures such as nanotubes, nanowires, nanorods, and nanobelts has attracted extensive attention because of their contribution to the understanding of fundamental concepts and their potential for future technological applications. This chapter reports the recent works of 1D ZnO- and Ga2O3-based nanostructures. Well-aligned β-Ga2O3 nanowires have been synthesized on the sapphire (0001) at low temperatures using a single precursor of gallium acetylacetonate through the vapor- liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism. Moreover, formation of the well-aligned and single-crystalline ZnGa2O4 nanowires on sapphire (0001) substrates has also been achieved via annealing of the Ga2O3-ZnO core-shell nanowires. Structural analysis of the annealed nanowires reveals the existence of an epitaxial relationship between ZnGa2O4 and Ga2O3 phases during the solid-state reaction.
