Abstract
To clear up the internal structure change of soft rock specimen during compression test, will bring much benefit to the investigation of rock failure process and the work to establish constitutive law for rock. The permeation property of rock always varied when the internal structure changed. This study, therefore, endeavors to develop a method to estimate the micro-structure change within a soft rock subjected to triaxial compression. This method is on the basis of measuring the variation of permeability and adopting some fundamental concepts of fracture mechanics. From the experimental results, it reveals that the failure process of soft rock is not the same when different confining pressures are used.
