Abstract
The graft copolymerization of acrylontrile (AN) onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in an aqueous solution at 6. 5 degree C by using a Ce(IV) catalyst was studied. The grafting rate, grafting yield, size and number of polymer particles formed under various concentrations of Ce(IV), AN and PVA, and degree of polymerization of PVA were investigated. The results show that the mechanism of the formation of polymer particles is homogeneous nucleation. The number of polymer particles rapidly increases initially and then becomes constant. The grafting yield and efficiency increase with the increase of the concentration of Ce(IV), concentration of AN and degree of polymerization of PVA. The empirical equation obtained which relates the number of polymer particles of latex with the concentration of Ce(IV), AN and PVA is given.
