Hydrodynamic forces on a floating cylinder in waves of finite depth.

Abstract

An indirect integral solution method is used in the paper to analyze the hydrodynamic forces, i.e. exciting forces, added mass and damping coefficients, of a two dimensional floating cylinder in waves of finite depth. The series form of the Greens function, which has the advantage of avoiding the Cauchy principal value integral appearing in other forms, and the source sink distribution technique are employed. It is found that the suitable terms for the series of Greens function and segment of the contour must be carefully selected in order to obtain more accurate results, especially for a rectangular shape body. The numerical results have been compared with those of other theories and good agreements are obtained. The technique developed in this paper is a rather simple and straightforward method which can be easily extended to a whole ship in oblique waves either with or without speed, or the case of a floating structure near a quay etc.
